Ammunition that has remained in the ground in an abandoned military base in Russia’s Udmurt Republic since a fire in 2011 is exploding due to grassfires, a representative of the Russian emergency services said on Saturday.
“In the Pugachevo village, there are explosions of the ammunition left in the ground after a major emergency in 2011”, the representative said.
He has specified that the nearest houses are 1.2 miles away from the site.
In June 2011, a fire broke out at an ammo depot near the Pugachevo village in the Udmurt Republic, causing stored ammunition to explode. The leftover ammunition has been occasionally exploding in the ground during grassfires since then.
