The Media Department of the Southern Military District press service announced that the Black Sea Fleet’s Su-27 fighter jets intercepted a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance plane on Wednesday.
“On July 1, 2020, the rotating forces of the Southern District air defense monitored the movements of a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea and were accompanied at the appropriate time by Russian fighters. At a significant distance from the Russian border, the approaching air target was accompanied by a continuous means of Russian radar surveillance. ”
They confirmed that the Su-27 multi-purpose fighter had been sent to intercept the American plane.
“The Russian fighters approached the air target and identified it as the American RC-135W Rivet Joint reconnaissance plane. After that, it moved away from Russia’s borders. It did not violate the borders,” the administration added.
It is noteworthy to add that yesterday’s interception by the Russian Su-27 jet marks the 2nd time in a week that they have escorted a U.S. military aircraft over the Black Sea waters.
