Italy’s Venice underwater for the second day.

Venice residents woke up to find more than 70 percent of the city underwater for the second day in a row on Wednesday, after being hit by record tides and strong winds on Tuesday.

Residents and tourists are struggling to make their way through the flooded St. Mark’s Square, while shop owners used planks in an attempt to block the water from flooding their shops.

Winter flooding, dubbed “acqua alta” in Venice, meaning “high water”, reached 187cm (73 inches), the highest level since 1966.

Media reported two people died due to the flood so far. The city declared a state of emergency on Wednesday morning.
