Thousands of Israelis demonstrated on Saturday evening in different parts of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, interim Prime Minister, at a time when marches in support of him.
JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been accused of bribery, dishonesty and fraud in three corruption cases on Saturday, according to Hebrew media.
The newspaper “Yediot Aharonot”, that two demonstrations took place in occupied Jerusalem, near Netanyahu’s residence on the street “Balfour”, the first participated by about 350 of his supporters who considered that the indictment against him “coup”, while demonstrating from the other side of the same street about 100 Of Netanyahu’s opponents, and called on him to resign immediately.
At Habima Square in downtown Tel Aviv, some 2,500 people demonstrated under the slogan “Bibi (Netanyahu) resigned.”
The demonstration in Tel Aviv was organized by the Democratic Union (a left-wing coalition with 5 seats in the 120-seat Knesset).
Union leader Nisan Horevich called on the Israeli public to come down and join the demonstration, saying: “Anyone who will stick to his blind loyalty to Netanyahu will be remembered as having participated in the most serious corruption of Israeli democracy.”
“Netanyahu has to resign. A new government must be established. Israel is against Netanyahu,” he said. “Whenever Netanyahu remains entrenched in Balfour, the institutions of the state and the infrastructure on which Israeli society is based will be eroded.”
He added, “Horevich”: “If he does not resign, a new government must be formed even before the dissolution of the current Knesset, so as to prevent him from clinging to power as long as possible.”
“Our loyalty, first as the public and as deputies, to the State of Israel and to the rule of law and democracy. Not to Caesar, not to be accused of corruption.”
“These are the days of the political moribund of the outgoing prime minister. There is life after Netanyahu,” Horovich told members of Netanyahu’s Likud party.
On the other hand, dozens of demonstrators in support of Netanyahu in the city of Kiryat Bialik near Haifa (north), according to “Yediot Aharonot.”
This comes at a time when the private channel (13), on Saturday evening, that Attorney General Mandelblit may order Benjamin Netanyahu to resign from his position as prime minister of the transitional government.
“It is estimated that the Supreme Court will soon discuss whether the outgoing prime minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu can serve in a transitional government, as the attorney general intends to file an indictment against him,” the channel said.
The channel pointed out that some officials in the Ministry of Justice believe that Netanyahu is supposed to resign, in light of recent developments on the filing of an indictment against him.
