The Iraqi government has plans to renovate Abu Ghraib prison in efforts to receive thousands of Islamic State (IS) prisoners, an Iraqi source revealed on Sunday.
According to the source, the government has canceled previous plans to destroy the prison and use the land for housing projects, pointing out that the building will be renovated once again.
Apart from accelerating the work on Babil jail, Iraq is also working on expanding the prisons of Taji and Hwt in Nasiriyah province, the source added.
“The current plan is to expand the jail in order that it can contain as many prisoners as possible,” he concluded.
