The 2022 Qatar Organizing Committee decided to select Younis Mohammed as the committee’s ambassador.

Qatar is hosting the first World Cup in the Middle East by the winter of 2022.

Younis Mahmoud is an Iraqi former professional footballer who played as a striker for the Iraq national football team. One of the country’s greatest ever players, Mahmoud captained the team for ten straight years and became an icon of Asian football.

He also played for a number of clubs including teams in Iraq, UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, breaking numerous records.

He is the only Iraqi player in history to have made the Ballon d’Or shortlist when he finished 29th in 2007. He was the only outfield player on the list who didn’t play his club football in Europe and was the only Asian player to make the final 30.

Kaká won the Ballon d’Or that year, while Mahmoud earned two points, finishing ahead of 20 world-renowned players including the likes of Samuel Eto’o, David Beckham and Robin van Persie.
