The Iraqi army and country’s paramilitary forces on Wednesday launched a fresh military operation against the remnants of the Islamic State (IS).
The operation, dubbed “Heroes of Iraq”, aims to clear Anbar deserts and Iraq’s border with Syria and Jordan, west of the country, according to joint operations command.
This is the first large-scale operation after Iraq concluded eight phases of the “Victory Operation” last year.
Head of Joint Operations Command Abdul amir Yarallah said the new anti-IS campaign was launched through five axes with warplanes providing aerial cover to the troops on the ground.
