US Senator Bernie Sanders won in the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire, a week after the Iowa caucuses were thrown into confusion by a failure of the vote-counting systems.
With 95% of precincts reporting in the second race, Sanders led with 26%. The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, was in second with 24.4% and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar in third with 19.7%.
After winning New Hampshire in 2016 with a margin of more than 20 points over Hillary Clinton, Sanders was expected to win easily. However, the race between Sanders and Buttigieg was surprisingly close.
Sanders later proclaimed his victory in a speech: “Let me take the opportunity to thank the people of New Hampshire for a great victory tonight. Let me say tonight this victory here is the beginning of the end for Donald Trump”, he said.
“The reason that we are going to win is that we are putting together an unprecedented, multi-generational, multiracial political movement. This is a movement from coast to coast, which is demanding that we finally have an economy, and a government that works for all of us — not wealthy campaign contributors”, he said.
