Sen. Warren announces run for 2020, calls Trump administration ‘most corrupt’

US Senator Elizabeth Warren has called the Trump administration “the most corrupt” as she formally launched her bid for the 2020 presidential election.

During her speech on Saturday, the Massachusetts Democrat promised to tackle economic inequality in the country, a massage she hopes will help her move past criticism over her claims to Native American heritage.Warren, 69, made the announcement at a mill site in Lawrence, north-west of Boston, where largely immigrant factory workers went on strike almost 100 years ago.

The location, where the “Bread and Roses” strike of textile workers took place in 1912, is significant as it is considered a landmark moment for labor in the US.

“This is the fight of our lives. The fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone. I am in that fight all the way,” Warren, 69, said in her announcement speech. She also took aim at President Donald Trump, accusing his administration of being “the most corrupt in living memory” and lacking “a conscience” with its controversial immigration policies.

“The man in the White House is not the cause of what is broken. He is just the latest and most extreme symptom of what’s gone wrong in America,” she said.

She also portrayed herself as a fighter, who is willing to carry out major reforms in the country. “It won’t be enough to just undo the terrible acts of this administration. We can’t afford to just tinker around the edges – a tax credit here, a regulation there. Our fight is for big, structural change.”

Warren, who formed an exploratory committee on New Year’s Eve that allowed her to raise money for her campaign, is the first high-profile Democrat to signal interest in running for president. Meanwhile, Trump weighed in on his newest campaign rival, mocking her claims of Native American ancestry in a tweet.

Trump has frequently made jokes aimed at Warren’s past statements referencing unspecified Native American ancestry. In January, after Warren posted a video on Instagram about her forming the exploratory committee, Trump tweeted, “If Elizabeth Warren, often referred to by me as Pocahontas, did this commercial from Bighorn or Wounded Knee instead of her kitchen, with her husband dressed in full Indian garb, it would have been a smash!”
