Swedish princess joins health crews to combat coronavirus

Swedish Princess Sofia joined the ranks of health care crews in Sweden after three days of intense training in the midst of the new Corona Virus crisis, according to the royal palace.
The 35-year-old princess, the wife of King Gustav’s son, has since Thursday been a volunteer healthcare assistant at Sophiaement Hospital in Stockholm.

“As honorary president of the hospital, she wanted to help in the crisis in Sweden,” said Margarita Thurgren, a spokesperson for the Royal Palace.

Princess Sofia became a member of the Swedish royal family by marrying Prince Karl Philip in 2015. She followed extensive training for three days to be able to assist hospital crews.

This training comes within the framework of an initiative that aims to train workers in the hotel and restaurant sector who have become unemployed due to the pandemic, in order to be able to help hospitals and elderly care centers in the country.

Sweden took a different approach from the rest of Europe by choosing not to isolate the residents in their homes. Health authorities called on everyone to “show a sense of responsibility” while adopting social separation and strict application of hygiene and quarantine rules in the event of symptoms.

But it prevented gatherings of more than fifty people and visits to the nursing homes.

As of Friday, there had been 13216 confirmed injuries and 1,400 deaths.
