The European Union (EU) reiterated its support to the World Health Organization (WHO) this week and urged the United States to reconsider the decision to suspend its ties with that entity.
US President Donald Trump has announced the end of his country’s relations with WHO and reported his government will redirect the promised funds to that body to other institutions responsible for world health.
In a joint statement, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU’s high representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, assured that the community bloc will continue to support WHO and asked to avoid actions that undermine global efforts against Covid-19.
Global cooperation and solidarity are the only effective and viable ways to win the battle we are fighting today. WHO must continue to be able to lead the international response to this pandemic and others in the future, the text states.
It also indicates that to contain the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the participation and collaboration of all is necessary.
This is the time to strengthen cooperation and seek common solutions. Anything that undermines global actions should be avoided. In this context, we urge the United States to reconsider its decision, it adds.
Also, remember that today the main task is to save lives and mitigate the effects of the pandemic.
The statement also states that the EU provided additional funding to WHO and supports an evaluation of the response to Covid-19, but with the aim of applying the lessons learned to increase preparedness and improve ways of acting in future situations.
Trump’s decision to cut ties with the agency comes after the president threatened to suspend US financial contributions to WHO if it did not make ‘substantial improvements in 30 days.’
The American president is criticized by numerous voices the world over and accused of wanting to divert attention from the poor response given by his administration to the health crisis.
