The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced, on Wednesday, the start of the second military operation in northern Iraq within two days, which it called “Tiger-Claw”, despite the Iraqi protest.
“The operation (Tiger-Claw) has started, as commando units are currently in the Heftanin area,” the ministry said in a Twitter Tweet.
The “Heftanin” area is located north of Zakho, Dohuk Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where Turkish forces carry out their operations against PKK elements.
The Turkish Armed Forces launched a “Tiger-Claw” operation late on Sunday night, and Turkish warplanes carried out an intensive bombing operation inside Iraqi territory.
Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad, and delivered a memorandum of protest against it against the backdrop of the Turkish bombing of sites in northern Iraq yesterday.
On Monday, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned the military operation launched by Turkey in the regions of northern Iraq.
Aboul Gheit affirmed in a statement that “Turkish military intervention represents an attack on Iraqi sovereignty, and is taking place without coordination with the government in Baghdad, reflecting Ankara’s disdain for international law and its relations with its Arab neighbors alike.
