Palestinians Protest Against Israeli Plans to Extend Its Sovereignty Over West Bank

Earlier this week, Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said that the 1 July deadline for Israel to extend its sovereignty over some parts of the West Bank, was not “a sacred date,” stressing that his priorities lay in tackling COVID-19, not new territory.

Palestinians take to the streets of Ramallah on 1 July to protest against Israeli government plans to extend its sovereignty to parts of the West Bank.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu had previously pledged to begin the process from 1 July, but multiple media reports suggest that he has decided to postpone his plans amid mounting international and regional pressure.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said last week that the Israeli government’s plans would be a “most serious violation of international law.”
