The Parliamentary Agriculture Committee announced that Iraq intends to export 900,000 tons of barley during the coming days after achieving self-sufficiency, stating: “Iraq will announce its readiness to export fish, chicken and eggs during the next six months.”
The head of the committee, Salam al-Shimmari said in a statement that the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) received a copy of it: “Iraq was importing 5 million tons of wheat and barley during the past years, but this year it achieved self-sufficiency of wheat and barley crops,” noting: “Iraq plans to export 900,000 tons of barley in the coming days, after achieving self-sufficiency.”
Al-Shimmari indicated: “Iraq possesses more than 20 million dunums of land suitable for growing agricultural crops, and in the coming months, it will export eggs, chicken and fish after achieving self-sufficiency.”
He added: “The government provides farmers with 50% support, but corruption and extortion made them not to reach farmers.”
He emphasized: “The Agriculture Committee is determined to support the closure of borders in the face of agricultural crops, of which Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency.”
