Iraqi security forces have foiled a series of major terrorist attacks after capturing a group of militants in the capital city, an official revealed on Tuesday.
Three people, who are believed to be members of the Islamic State (IS) coming from Syria, were captured near the Baghdad River in an operation based on intelligence provided by the Iraqi Intelligence Service, said Abdul Wahab Saedi, Commander of the Baghdad Joint Operations.
The group had prepared explosives for several major explosions targeting crowded marketplaces in central and southern Baghdad.
Iraq’s Interior Ministry said in a separate statement that after capturing the group, the police forces have launched a search operation on Baghdad streets looking for any possible explosive devices or suspicious objects.
