On Thursday, Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc rejected the Central Bank of Lebanon’s decision to lift fuel subsidies, saying that it contradicts the policies applied by parliament and the government.
In addition to the statement issued by the Banque du Liban regarding hydrocarbons, the Banque du Liban had written to the government since August 2020, i.e. about a year ago, stressing that it is not legally possible to prejudice the mandatory foreign currency investments it has.
He has repeatedly confirmed this in other correspondences and in all the meetings he held with the references concerned with the support policy, stressing that prejudice to these investments requires legislative intervention.
On the other hand, despite the fact that the Banque du Liban paid more than $800 million for fuels in the past month, and the bill for medicines and other necessary materials has doubled, all these materials are still missing from the market and are sold at prices that exceed their value, even if subsidies are lifted. ! This proves the necessity of moving from subsidizing commodities, which benefit the merchant and monopoly, to directly supporting the citizen, which preserves the dignity of citizens in light of these difficult conditions that the country is going through.
On Wednesday night, a statement was issued by the Banque du Liban confirming the lifting of fuel subsidies, and accordingly, President Michel Aoun summoned today the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh.
