Iraq’s Ministry of Health said on Saturday (August 28) it recorded 5,369 coronavirus infections and 73 deaths in the country over the past 24 hours.
Of that total 947 of the newest cases are in Baghdad governorate, along with 810 in Basra, 481 in Duhok, 363 in Maysan, 352 in Karbala, 336 in Wasit, 294 in Diyala, 277 in Dhi Qar, 270 in Saladin, 252 in Kirkuk, 239 in Nineveh, 186 in Babil, 145 in Diwaniya, 140 in Sulaimani, 122 in Najaf, 83 in Erbil, 41 in Muthanna, and 31 in Anbar.
The ministry reported that 73 patients died from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus infection, and 8,153 recovered from it.
According to the ministry, 3,274,154 people have been vaccinated in Iraq, a country of more than 40 million, since the first shipment of vaccines arrived on February 28.
There have been 1,868,352 officially recorded cases of coronavirus across Iraq since the virus first appeared in the country last year. At least 1,711,405 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and a total of 20,632 people have died from it in Iraq.
The numbers are almost certainly an undercount.
