China has urged the United States to stop sending wrong signals in any form to the so-called “independence” forces of the Chinese Taipei after Washington said it attempts to enable the self-ruled island to take part meaningfully at the United Nations.
China has sovereignty over the Chinese Taipei, and under the ‘One China’ policy, almost all world countries recognize that sovereignty. The US, too, recognizes the Chinese sovereignty over the island, but has long courted Taipei in an attempt to unnerve Beijing.
Furthermore, Washington, which backs Taipei’s secessionist president, also infuriates Beijing by selling weapons to the self-governed island in violation of its own official policy.
The Chinese government opposes other countries pursuing ties with the Chinese Taipei and has consistently warned Washington and other countries against engaging with Taipei.
On Saturday, the US State Department said in a statement that American and Taiwanese officials had met virtually a day earlier for a “discussion focused on supporting Taiwan’s ability to participate meaningfully at the UN.”
The provocative statement came just two days before Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered his speech commemorating the 50 years since the restoration of all lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the UN.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the US should abide by the One China principle, warning Washington of “sending” any kinds of “wrong signals” to the Chinese Taipei.
“The United Nations is an intergovernmental international organization composed of sovereign states. The UN General Assembly Resolution 2785 adopted in 1971 has thoroughly solved the issue of the representation of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations politically, legally, and procedurally,” he said at a press conference in Beijing.
“The specialized agencies under the United Nations system and the UN Secretariat should abide by the One China principle and Resolution 2758 in all matters related to the Taiwan region,” Wang added.
Back in 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority at its 26th session, where it decided to restore all lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China in the world body and recognize the representatives of its government as the only legitimate UN representatives of China.
“All the member states of the United Nations including the U.S. recognize that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan region’s participation in the activities of international organizations must be handled in accordance with the One China principle,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Wang also lambasted as “doomed to fail” the attempts made by authorities in the Chinese Taipei to expand the island’s so-called “international space” by relying on foreign forces, with the real aim of enlarging the space for separating the island from China’s territory.
The Chinese official also called on Washington to stop maintaining any official contact with authorities in the Chinese Taipei.
“China urges the US side to abide by the One China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, honor the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and stop maintaining any official contact with the Taiwan region or making any irresponsible remarks,” Wand said.
He also urged the American side to “stop allowing or supporting the Taiwan authorities in expanding the space for separating Taiwan from China’s territory and stop doing things harmful to the China-US relationship and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.”
Relations between the US and China have grown tense in recent years, with the world’s two largest economies clashing over a range of issues, including trade, the Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, military activities in the South China Sea, and the origins of the new coronavirus.
