The Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency announced on Thursday (January 20) the arrest of a suspect who had a hand in a major terror attack in Baghdad in 2016 as well as numerous other terrorist operations in the Iraqi capital.
A statement from the agency, cited by Iraqi News Agency, which referred to the suspect as a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, said he confessed to transporting suicide bombers in 2016 who were active in attacks in the neighborhoods of Kadhimiya and al-Hurriya in Baghdad, as well as an attack on a gas plant in Taji, north of the Iraqi capital.
The suspect also confessed to planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Baghdad, according to the agency’s statement, as well as to his involvement in attacks in 2019 targeting the neighborhoods of al-Shu’ala and al-Sha’ab in the Iraqi capital.
Kadhimiya, an important site of pilgrimage for Shia Muslims, was struck by a number of militant attacks on April 30, 2016, including a car bombing in April which killed at least 38 people, and a suicide attack on May 11, 2016, when 18 were killed in the neighborhood.
