Russia says the United States is planning to move its unfinished programs for the development of biological weapons from Ukraine to another country in Eastern Europe, in a move that threatens the host country.
Russia has formerly said it has discovered signs of several bio laboratories in Ukraine.
The laboratories were reportedly working on pathogens that could be used in the production of the banned biological weapons.
Russia said it has also found documents that the Pentagon-funded this research.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday it has evidence that tissue samples and dangerous pathogens are now being moved from Ukraine abroad, Sputnik reported.
“Right now, we are seeing several publications in the foreign press with a nervous reaction from Washington to the release of extremely sensitive documents by the [Russian] Defense Ministry. Journalists note that the American intelligence services are taking unprecedented steps to prevent Russia from having access to potential witnesses close to the implementation of the classified military biological projects of the Pentagon in Ukraine,” said the defense ministry.
Ukraine has been involved in a war with Russia since Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a military campaign in the neighboring country in late February. The Russian president said the campaign was to “de-Nazify” Ukraine.
During the press briefing, the ministry also said that Kiev has asked Turkish drone manufacturer Bayraktar to equip some of its drones with aerosol spray systems that can hold and disperse up to 20 liters of substance.
It said that Kiev filed the request in mid-December, last year — ahead of the ongoing war in Ukraine — to get prepared for the use of biological weapons against Russia
Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops of the Russian Armed Forces Igor Kirillov warned this can create “a real threat of large-scale use of biological weapons in Russian territory.”
He said the patent for a drone capable of dispersing insects infected with dangerous pathogens had been registered in the United States, meaning such a device has already been developed and was functioning.
The patent’s description, according to Kirillov, details that the device could be used to kill or incapacitate enemy troops without any threat to the US military.
Both Ukraine and Russia have signed a treaty outlawing biological weapons. But Russia has for years said former Soviet countries were manufacturing biological weapons at laboratories funded by the United States.
