The latest missile launched fell into Japanese waters and flew around 6,000km, according to South Korean and Japanese estimates, but has the capacity to go much further – approx. 15,000km – which “could cover the entire mainland United States,” the Japanese Defense Minister said.
The US scrambled to “all necessary measures” to guarantee the safety of itself and its allies – describing the attack – which came after joint drills between US and South Korean air forces in the area – as a “brazen violation” that “destabilizes security in the region.”
Russia called for diplomacy in the aftermath, with Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Ryabkov saying: “it’s been particularly evident recently that the United States and its allies in the region prefer a different path. It’s as if Pyongyang’s patience is being tested.”
