Deputy Speaker of Iraqi Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi on Saturday condemned the drone attack on Sulaymaniyah’s airport, which he described as a “grave violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty.
We strongly condemn the targeting of Sulaymaniyah International Airport. This is a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty, and a threat to our citizens,” Al-Mandalawi said in a tweet today.
To preserve sovereignty and protect people from harm, we have directed the Committee on Defense and Security to form a committee to investigate the circumstances under which the attack took place, and submit an urgent report.”
A suspected “Turkish drone” targeted Sulaymaniyah’s international airport on Friday evening, landing within the perimeters of the airport causing some fires in the area. The incident happened while Mazlum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), was reportedly departing the airport for Rojava after he had met with US military commanders in the city, a claim which the SDF subsequently denied.
