Majority of Americans don’t want Trump-Biden rematch: Poll

A majority of Americans say they don’t want Joe Biden or Donald Trump to run for president in 2024, setting up a potentially bitter and divisive rematch between the two, a new poll has found.

A new NBC News poll found that 60 percent of Americans think former president Trump should not run for president again— including roughly a third of Republicans. Thirty percent of those opposed to his 2024 run cite the criminal charges he faces in New York as “a major reason.”

In the meantime, the survey showed that 70 percent of Americans believe that President Biden should not campaign for a second term either, including 51 percent of Democrats.

Almost half of those who were against Biden running again cited his age as a significant factor. Trump is 76 years old.

The findings are consistent with other surveys that suggest a lack of excitement for a 2020 rematch between Trump and Biden.

Trump launched his campaign shortly after the midterm elections in November, and Biden is expected to announce his candidacy soon.

A Yahoo News/YouGov survey has found that 38 percent of Americans feel “exhaustion” at the prospect of a Biden-Trump rematch.

According to the NBC News poll, Trump is still the favorite candidate among potential Republican primary voters, with a 15 percent lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has not yet announced his bid for the White House.

Despite a general lack of enthusiasm for a Trump campaign, two-thirds of Republican primary voters still say they stand behind the former president in the face of his recent criminal arrest and other legal investigations into his past conduct.
