US President Joe Biden, 80, has announced his 2024 reelection campaign setting the scene for a rematch against his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, who will be 77 next year.

Already Biden is the oldest president in US history and he would be 86 by the end of his second term if he were to win reelection in 2024.

On Tuesday, Biden described next year’s US presidential race as a competition between Democrats and Trump, who in their view represented Republicans of the extremist degree.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we’re in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are,” Biden said.

Republicans constituted a threat to the American definition of freedom, according to Biden who pledged to fight efforts to limit women’s healthcare, cut Social Security and ban books, while blasting “MAGA extremists.” MAGA is the acronym for the “Make America Great Again” political slogan of Trump.

Biden insisted he needed a second term in office to garner enough time to realize his vows and restore the United States to its full character.

“This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for reelection,” he said. “Let’s finish this job. I know we can.”

The incumbent announced his participation in the 2024 race which has so far been dominated on the Republican side by Trump, who launched his third bid for the White House in November.

However, a majority of Americans say they do not want Biden, nor Trump to run for president in 2024.

In the meantime, no prominent Democratic challenger is expected to emerge against Biden. So far, Marianne Williamson, 70, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr, 69, have been the only names reported in this regard.

Biden’s age makes his re-election bid a historic and risky gamble for the Democratic Party, which faces a tough election map to hold the Senate in 2024 and is the minority in the House of Representatives now.

A previous poll conducted in December had found almost 60 percent of registered voters in the US expressing serious concerns about Biden’s mental fitness, citing frequent instances in which Biden had appeared to be completely disoriented in public.
