After Donald Trump told four progressive Democrats to “go back” to where they came from in a tweet on Sunday, Twitter exploded with users rebuking the president as “racist,” making the hashtags #RacistInChief and #TrumpIsARacist trend across America.
Trump, on Sunday morning, referenced an ongoing feud between freshman progressive Democrats and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and urged the congresswomen involved “who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” to “go back” and “help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
“Then come back and show us how it is done,” the president added. “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
Trump did not specify exactly which progressive congresswomen he was referring to. However, most agreed that his comments were directed at the four members of the so-called “Squad,” consisting of first-term Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.). Despite the president’s apparent claim that these lawmakers were all foreign-born, only Omar — who came to the U.S. as a child after her family fled their home nation — was born outside America. Omar became a U.S. citizen at age 17.
Although Pelosi has publicly feuded with the four lawmakers in recent weeks over border spending, the Democratic leader was one of the first to stand by the freshman progressives following Trump’s tweet. “When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ‘Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again,” the speaker wrote.
Other Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, Omar and Pressley, also quickly took to Twitter to call Trump’s tweet “racist,” as well as tens of thousands of social media users.
On Sunday afternoon, the hashtags #RacistInChief and #TrumpIsARacist began trending on Twitter.
“While the #RacistInChief is telling our four congressmen [sic] to go back to their country; he needs [sic] to send his immigrant wife and in-laws back to the country he brought them from,” Holly Horton tweeted.

I get tweets from racists all the time, telling me to "go back to my country" if I don't like it here.
But I was BORN HERE.
And my parents were BORN HERE.That's besides the point. You don't expect to see a "president" saying it to duly-elected Congresswomen.#RacistInChief pic.twitter.com/xUKkpRCeNg

And when caught, did nothing to make it right. #RacistInChief.”
