China: All flights canceled at Hong Kong airport as thousands protest

The Hong Kong Airport Authority canceled all scheduled flights on Monday, amid thousands protesting at the airport for the fourth consecutive day, the airline said in a statement.

“Traffic on the roads leading to the airport is heavily congested because of the demonstrations,” said the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in China. Hong Kong is now in a “critical phase” after two months of anti-government protests Violence there must stop, he said.

“Those who care about the city should declare their rejection of violence,” said Yang Guang, a spokesman for the office, in a media address expressing support for the police’s handling of the protests. Increasingly, violence is the biggest challenge for Chinese President Xi Jinping since he took office in 2012.

The protests began in opposition to a bill to hand over people accused of criminal cases to China for trial, but have now developed into wider dissatisfaction with the city government and China’s central government.
