Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus have arrived and, despite their flaws, they look absolutely stunning. Meanwhile, the price of the Galaxy S10 is dropping like a stone, making it a no brainer for some. But now Galaxy S11 details are leaking fast and, given what we already know, you might want to think again.
Following news from popular Samsung insider Ice Universe that the Galaxy S11 has entered the research and development stage, we are starting to get a clear indication of what users can expect from a phone described as “a new beginning” for the company.
Codename – Samsung gives away the main focus of the Galaxy S11 with its leaked codename: Picasso. Samsung has begun naming its devices after painters and it chose ‘Da Vinci’ for the Note 10 (an artist famed for its all-round brilliance). Conversely, Picasso was a revolutionary painter known for his incredible use of color. Which brings us to…
Camera – While it may still top lab tests, everyone knows the Galaxy range has slipped behind Apple, Google and Huawei as a point and shoot master. This is because the Galaxy range has been using the same 12MP sensor first introduced in the Galaxy S7 in 2016. But we know the Galaxy S11 marks the start of a new era with a brand new rear camera module and expect the colors, in particular, to pop.
Design – The Galaxy Note 10 Plus already has a class-leading screen-to-body ratio but we know Galaxy S11 will push this even further by shrinking the front camera. That said, it won’t disappear under the display until 2021. I’d also be amazed if a high refresh rate 90/120Hz display doesn’t make it as this feature has taken the sector by storm in 2019 and it is already missed on the Galaxy S10 and Note 10.
Performance – The word is out and the Galaxy S11 has the potential to steal Apple’s crown after next-generation benchmarks leaked early. Samsung has also confirmed all-new memory which blows the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 away. 5G is also a certainty this time around, not an optional extra.
Battery Life – the Galaxy S11 is unlikely to break the mold when it comes to battery capacity but we have learned Samsung is working on revolutionary graphene batteries which have the potential to deliver a full charge in just 30 minutes. 2020 is stated as the target for their release, so the Galaxy S11 could make the cut. If not, it will just have to scrape by with the Note 10’s 45W Super Fast charging and expect a 45W charger in the box this time.
Downsides – the Galaxy S11 looks set to have all the bad points of the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus: for the S11e that means no microSD while every model will lose the headphone jack.
But perhaps the biggest upside to the Galaxy S11 is the competition it will face. Apple’s 2020 iPhones have already been extensively leaked and we know Apple is throwing the kitchen sink at them with brand new design, ProMotion displays, 3D cameras, a long-awaited move to USB-C and 5G in every model.
So yes, Samsung is going to bring its A-Game with the Galaxy S11 because (bizarre self-sabotage aside) it has no other choice.
