UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned at the opening of the UN General Assembly that a war could break out in the Gulf region that the world could not afford.
Guterres said in a speech on Tuesday at the opening of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly: “We are currently seeing a worrying prospect of armed conflict in the Gulf region cannot bear the consequences of the world,” he said.
The UN chief described the attack on two vital Aramco facilities earlier in September as “totally unacceptable”, ignoring the Saudi aggression against the Yemeni people and their right of reply.
He expressed his hope that the progress achieved in the field of nuclear non-proliferation will be maintained thanks to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program.
Guterres pointed out in a speech to a wide circle of conflicts and disputes in the world, and said: “With the possibility of any small misjudgment caused the outbreak of a major confrontation, we must do everything possible to achieve a commitment to rationality and restraint.”
The 74th session of the UN General Assembly opens on Tuesday, coinciding with a major tension in the Persian Gulf region between Iran and the United States as a result of US hostile actions against Iran after the Donald Trump administration withdrew from the nuclear deal and imposed a series of embargo measures against Iran.
