UK: Lindsay Hoyle elected as Commons speaker.

The veteran Labour party MP, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has replaced John Bercow as the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Hoyle, who has been an MP for the Chorley constituency since 1997, becomes the 158th speaker of the House of Commons after beating six other contenders in a secret ballot of MPs.

In the fourth and final round of voting, Hoyle received 325 votes, beating Labour MP Chris Bryant to second place with 213 votes.

Based on Commons political impartiality rules, Hoyle is now obliged to resign from the Labour party.

In his opening remarks as the new Commons speaker, Hoyle told MPs that: “This House will change, but it will change for the better”.

Hoyle also pledged to be a “transparent” Speaker.
