Clashes erupted between anti-government demonstrators and the riot police during the so-called ‘Super Monday’ of protests on the streets of Chile’s capital city of Santiago on Monday.
The riot police used water cannons and tear gas as they tried to disperse the protesters gathered near Plaza Italia square, who, in turn, hurled rocks at the police.
The current wave of demonstrations, which is considered to be the worst in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike.
The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations as well as demanding the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
